j Evidence that a young man. who was allegedly robbed tn his bedroom by two men early on the morning of 'August 16. had been made to !write out notes saying he! was signing over his watch, radio cassette player, and ‘his girlfriend, was given ini ‘the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Notes’stained with blood, allegediv from the complainant's facial injuries i after being hit by the men.! were produced in Court. _ ; Maurice Alan Joseph Pahl, aged 27. (Mr S. C. Barkery and Russell Douglas White, aged 20 (Mr M. J. Glue)! pleaded not guilty and’ elected trial by jury on a joint charge of robbing; Thomas Colin Jensen of the; cassette player and wrist j watch, of a total value of: $619. in Ashburton on August 16. After depositions of six: prosecution witnesses were ! heard. Mr M. B. Hayes and I Mrs M. G. Atkins, Justices i |of the Peace, held there was! !a prima facie case to answer. , They remanded the two (defendants in custody, pendi ing their Supreme Court trial. Consel for both men reserved their defence. The two were also remanded in custody to Octoiber 30 for the taking of depositions in Ashburton on other charges. Pahl faces eight charges: of false pretence, allegedly committed in Mid-Canter-bury and involving $235. Two forgery charges involving $4O are alleged against White. Sergeant K. J. Hurndell prosecuted at yesterday’s! depositions hearing. Mr Jensen said in evi-: dence that the two defend-1 ants called about midnight; on August 15 for a ‘‘chat’'! iand beer, and to collect two; I chairs. | They returned at 5.45 a.m., [and were let into the house; iby his girlfriend. They said 1 j they wanted a meal.
Mr Jensen said there was nothing in the cupboards. White went out and then rushed back into the room. Both men then began hitIting him. and Pahl said he wanted his cassette player Pahl asked White to take ia writing pad from a drawer and then asked the witness to sign over the cassette player to him. i White removed the watch I from Mr Jensen's wrist and [made him sign a docket that he had sold it to White. He was warned not to go [to the police or a doctor. [They then left with his girl--friend. Mr Jensen said he suffered a black and swollen eye, cut lips, cuts to the in : side of his mouth, a swollen [nose, scratches around his [eyes, and a sore scalp. Deborah Ann Grieve, an unemployed machinist, gave evidence of staying at Mr Jensen’s house when the defendants called. After they had asked for a meal but (were told there was none. White went out of the bed room and then ‘‘stormed back in." A bottle and then fists started flying. as both defendants hit Mr Jensen. “He had to sign over his tape recorder, his watch, and me and my belongings." Miss Grieve said. She said she did not want to leave with them, but did not say so because she did (not want to get the same as Mr Jensen. Detective Constable S. F. Hallinan gave evidence of interviewing White, who said he had been drinking since arriving in Ashburton on August 10 and meeting [Pahl. That was one of the 'reasons why he was in [trouble. j They were “full” when •they called at Mr Jensen’s [house and Pahl had beaten ijup Mr Jensen, and taken his i watch and cassette player i and made him sign a receipt • for it. 1 White later sold ihe watch, for $lO in a hotel.
