Late sport Ten teams each for golf competitors
An increase of two teams fori next year’s Woodward Cup and; a decrease of two in the Simon i Cup to bring both to 10, the> same number as the Bank C up, has been recommended for the 1980 inter-club competitions. This recommendation from the Canterbury Golf Association’s match committee was accepted by the management i committee at its meeting last! evening. The match committee also) recommended that tlie nine j rounds in each competition be[ played over one round on sep- • arate days with an «arly start,] but because of the comprehensive nature of the programme; from September onwards, it seems that the inter-club list might include two two-day j rounds. The match committee aisot suggested that the Simon Cup; revert to "off the stick" com i petition instead of handicap • matches. Mr I Wright opposed (that suggestion and he was not [without support. It will be dis 'cussed further at the next ; meeting.
i Invitations will be extended t« Central Canterbury and North ICanterburj- to provide teams in | the Woodward Cup competition jto fill the two vacancies. Mr R. F. Gilbert said that Central Canterbury was keen to enter the championship, but Mr G. G. Simpson said that the North Canterbury feeling would not be known until its annual (meeting late next month. I The Rangiora club, which (would provide the nucleus of (the North Canterbury team, has a number of top players who (would like to see a club rather I than an area team represented, j The match committee also proposed to hold a representsItive match against Otago next year. Teams would consist of ] eight players. A condition was that the match not be played |n ;either Dunedin or Christchurch lif the South Island inter- ; provincial match was in that I city the same season. Next year ; Christchurch will be host to tho ! South Island tournament The regional finals for th# Refer Stu.vvesant Cup will be -held at Waimairi Beach oq iFebruary 24.
