Melbourne Cup to remain top event
NZPA Melbourne The Melbourne Cup is to remain Australia’s premier
racing attraction. This year’s race on November 6 is worth $310,000, including trophies, making it the richest race in Australia.
Mr R. Steele, in his annual report to the Victorian Racing Club, said the committee did not want to engage in a “stakes race” with local or inter-state clubs.
“However, the club is conscious that Victoria has deservedly, a reputation for presenting racing of a class and standard that others wish to emulate,” said Mr Steele.
Mr Steele praised the introduction of the drug testing programme started before last year’s spring carnivals. “Since the programme was introduced 2600 horses have been tested and the fact that no ‘positives’ have been discovered is gratifying,” he said. The state government was the biggest winner from last season’s racing at Flemington! The report showed the Government received a total of $9,024,000 from bookmakers’ turnover tax and commission from on and offcourse totalisator investments. Bookmakers’ tax amounted to more than SI.3M.
