Fund-raising activities for this year’s Telethon are gathering momentum. This coming week and, more particularly, next week-end, hundreds of ) Canterbury people are getting out and making money for Telethon’s cause — the International Year of th e Child. The ; following are the activities j for this week: MONDAY I Christchurch plunket nurses will be baby-sitting children in the city area for j a minimum of $1 an hour, | to raise funds for Telethon. They are hoping parents will pay them much more than the minimum fee. For bookings, phone 60-765 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. The resident band at Adams Apple nightclub is playing disco requests at a minimum of 20c per request in aid of Telethon. Today and tomorrow, the “Christchurch Star” has organised a “whoppa Swoppa” competition for children. Prizes include a bicycle, a radio, and a skateboard and helmet, TUESDAY At 7.30 p.m. at the Redwood Community Centre, the 64th Canterbury Girl Guide company is holding a stall, a money trail and a mufti night. WEDNESDAY No activities. THURSDAY Between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m., the Fitzgerald District Girl Guides are holding a sponsored knitathon at the church hall on the corner of Olliviers Road and Cashel Street. FRIDAY At 8 p.m. the Christchurch Fire Service is holding a car rally, followed by a Bavarian evening in the New Brighton Hall. Between 8.30 a.m. and 4 p.m. members of the Prebbleton Fellowship Club, Parent Teacher Association, Playcentre and Plunket groups are holding a cake stall at the Springs Road shopping centre, Prebbleton.

At 4p.m., Lisa Ving (aged nine) and five friends will take part in a sponsored run from their home in Memorial Avenue to the airport and back.

Today and tomorrow, Mrs Houston, of 144 Harewood Road, is organising a 24-hour sponsored gameathon.

Today and tomorrow, Bronwyn Mason and Maria O’Connor are holding a sponsored tramoplineathon, beginning at 7 p.m. at 201 William Street, Kaiapoi. Pupils of Form 11, Oaklands School, are holding a spell-athon.

SATURDAY Form IV at Kaiapoi High School are holding a 24hour sponsored gameathon. Other students at the school have already held a mufti day for Telethon and two senior students will be among the Telethon telephonists and will be sponsored for their efforts. At 5 p.m., 20 students (both boys and girls) from Hagley High School will hold a 24-hour sponsored type-athon at the Multiple Sclerosis Hall, St Asaph Street. Typewriters supplied by 1.8. M. At 8 p.m. at the Queen Elizabeth II Park Restaurant, members of the Netherlands Society are holding a Boeren Dance and auction. Beginning at 10 a.m. members of the Canterbury Labrador and Retriever Club are holding a sponsored walk-athon around Hagley Park. Among the walkers will be Peter Whitworth and his three-legged dog. Steven Roome is organising a trampathon from his home at 7 Gilbert Place, Beckenham. Beginning at 3 p.m. Warwick Winn and his friends (all aged 11 and 12) are holding a 24-hour sponsored poolathon at the Breens Road School.

Beginning at 1 p.m. Linda Maloney and her friends are holding a sponsored roller-skateathon at Norrie and Wingate Streets. From 11 a.m. Karen Hyder has organised at stall, selling cakes and crafts, to be held at St Kentigerns Church, New Brighton.

Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Terry Mooney, a tennis coach, will be playing tennis with pupils and coaching at the same time at the Edgeware Tennis Club. His effort is being sponsored. Some of Canterbury’s best junior players will be there, and members of the public are welcome to bring rackets along and join in.

At 7 a.m., Martin Douglas and three of his friends will be starting off on a sponsored pedalathon from Christchurch to Rangiora and back. In the evening, six children will be taking part in a sponsored dartathon, at 61 Main Road, Redcliffs, for a minimum of 12 hours.

Beginning at 9 a.m. nurses from the Jubilee Hospital are holding a sponsored tandem bikeathon from Christchurch to Rangiora. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

at the Sydenham Service Station, members of the public can have their car’s exhaust emission-tested with the latest infra-red machine. The fee is SI for each car. From 9.30 a.m. Christine and Susan Tweedie are holding a stall, selling sweets, jams, preserves, children’s books, clothing and posters. The stall is being held on behalf of the deaf unit at Redcliffs School. Beginning at 2 p.m., 50 boys from the Hornby Scout group are holding a 24-hour scout-athon at the Hornby Scout Den, Denton Park. They will be doing

scouting activities and will be sponsored. Shane Forrester and Kelvin Phipps are having a 12-hour sponsored hushathon at 91 Waltham Road. Michael Baird is hating a 24-hour sponsored exercycle-athon at 40 Charnwood Crescent. This morning, members of the Canterbury Recreational Cycle Club are cycling to Brighton and back to raise money. Colin Wootton, Shaun and Lyn Baggariey and Michael Flynn are having a slot car-athon at St Stephen’s Preshjterian Church, in Ham Road. The Temuka Rotaraet Club will be rolling a barrel from the Geraldine Maternitj' Home to St Mary’s Church in Timaru. This afternoon, Timothy Birdland. Michael Pull and Christopher Hart (all aged nine and 10) will be cycling from Rangiora to

Kaiapoi and back. They will be sponsored. Eight women from the staff of McKenzies, Ltd, in High Street will be cycling to Kaiapoi to raise funds. SUNDAY Six staff members of Outdoor Sport (Snowline! will be ski-lng down the slopes of Mount Hutt as many times as they can. They are being sponsored for the number of vertical feet they can ski in one day, on the basis of 20c per person per 1000 ft. Anyone wanting to sponsor them can do so either at Snowline or up the mountain. Also at Mount Hutt, citizen's band radio enthusiasts will be setting up a transmitting control point, which can be contacted by all CB enthusiasts for a small contribution. Once the pledge money is received a QSL

card will be sent io (h» pledger. At 2 p.m. at The Theatre Royal, an I.Y.C. Children's Talent Show is being staged. All children taking part have won places in local club competitions. Acts will include accordionists, gymnasts, vocalists. country music singers, violinists and ballet dancers. At 10 a.m. at Cowies Stadium, there will be a celebrity basketball game, refereed by the Wizard, with teams from TV2 and American Field Service Scholars. The TV team includes Ken Ellis. Kim Adamson. Rk: Ditchburn. Anna Cottrell, Peter Hawes and Bret DumMeton. At 9 a.m. at The lleatlvcote Tennis Club grounds, members of the Heathcote Netball Club will be playing sponsored netball for 12 hours.
