Shortage of teachers predicted
PA Timaru Secondarv schools may be short of 1000 teachers at the start of the next school year, according to Mr R. E. M. Hodge, president of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association. Mr Hodge criticised the Minister of Education (Mr Wellington) who was “understating the position,” he said. “I believe Mr Wellington is misleading New Zealand,’ Mr Hodge said. “In the House of Representatives on Wednesday he quoted the February figures of 2006 fulltime vacancies. “The P.P.T.A. believes that the actual shortage exceeds 500, through our own surveys. “This represents two vacancies per school, and some schools have reported as mativ as five vacancies. “Manv more teachers have indicated their intentions of leaving if conditions are not significantly improved immediately,” Mr Hodge said.
