Imported wool
Sir, — Today I purchased a lambswool jumper. On removing the ticket, I discovered that the wool was imported from Geelong. One wonders, with such high quality New Zealand wools so readily available, why: (1) Manufacturers would look elsewhere for their product requirements? (2) With New Zealand being unable to sell much of its wool overseas that local manufacturers should not support primary industry? (3) The Government should grant an import
licence for this purpose? One would tend to wonder if the supposed equalisation of New Zealand’s balance Of payments can be achieved by the “coals to Newcastle” technique. — Yours, etc., CHRIS MORTEN. June 12, 1979.
