Immigrant women
Sir, — Once I was told by a well-educated kiwi: You are neither English nor Dutch, you are a third-class citizen, so keep quiet. In Europe I left behind many relatives living close together — language, traditions and a higher living standard — when I married a New Zealand citizen. The survey launched by the Society for Research on Women in New Zealand this week, called Immigrant Women, is easy, enjoyable, informative reading. New Zealanders, teachers, pupils, social workers and neighbours should read it. AfterWards they might understand us foreigners a little better. With a non-English name we are automatically foreigners, born here or not. Some of our children have adopted English surnames to be accepted. Should we have to give up even that? We are not bitter, but allow us to speak. All too often our ideas and suggestions are dismissed as criticism when all we want to do is to help and explain. — Yours, etc., KARI E. KERDEMELIDIS.
