Scholarship in music

Rachel Catanach, aged 15, a sixth-form pupil at Burnside High School, has been awarded a two-month scholarship with the World Youth Orchestra, which is based at Interlochen, Michigan. Miss Catanach, who has played the volin for nine years, will leave for the United States on June 24. She will be given private music lessons as well as playing with the orchestra. Teen-agers between 14 and 18, from various countries, are selected to take up the scholarships, which cover the cost of tuition and board. Miss Catanach plays with several musical groups, including the Christchurch Youth Orchestra. She is leader of the Burnside High School Orchestra and the school’s chamber orchestra.
