Notable bowling double for Burnside club

Alec Grainger and Elwyni Hay (s) completed a notable; double for the Burnside club; when they won the Christ-[ church Bowling Centre’s open pairs championship on the Spreydon green yesterday. Earlier this month, Lyn Hanger, of Burnside, took the open singles arid it is some years since the one dub has held both titles. It is the first Christchurch centre success for Grainger and Hay who both transferred from the Otago area a few years ago. Last summer they were members of the Burnside team skipped by Peter Rose, which was second in the Easter fours. Hay had a runaway victory over Doug Stuart (Dallington) in yesterday’s final. Stuart, whose partner was Pau! Peoples, almost doubled his total with a six on the second-to-last end, but he was still well beaten, 20-13. Hay. who played very ably throughout the tournament, was 7-5 ahead after after nine ends and he then

began a streak of winning heads which took him comfortably clear to 16-5 after 15. Stuart’s last chance went on the seventeenth end when he was holding four shots until Hay ran the jack into the ditch with his last bowl to score a single. Stuart’s six on the twentieth end were all drawn shots, but. there was never a chance of a repeat haul on the last end which Hay won with a single. In the semi-finals, 16 points on five ends in the middle stages gave Stuart a commanding lead over Rose (Burnside), whose partner was Tom Brady. The run put Stuart ahead 23-9 and he was not afterwards threatened.

Hay had a much tougher time surviving. An early five and later a six kept him in contact with Tony Deane (Woolston), who had Norm Wales leading for him. Hay was unlucky to give away the shot on the penultimate end, cutting his lead to one point, 21-20.

Deane had the two shots ' he needed for victory on the last end until Hay drew a toucher with his second delivery and he stayed right op the jack. Deane was a little too wide with, his lastbowl bid to run off Hay’s toucher. The tournament resumed on Saturday with the 15 teams which had survived the first three rounds of post-section play a fortnight earlier. Results: Fourth round.—B. Main (Hornby* 24. L.
