Boilermen’s position
Sir, — Before everybody gets uptight about Mr Gordon’s outburst on Friday (as broadcast on 3ZB at 11 p.m.) about the boilermen’s “strikes in motion,” perhaps it would be as well to set things into perspective. We agreed to a 9.8 per cent increase only, when every other union is claiming 10 per cent or more increase. All we. are asking for now is 20 cents an hour recognition and respect for our certificates, gained by examination set by the Marine Department. Under the Marine Department regulations, any fireman holding a boilerman’s certificate who makes a mistake, can immediately lose his certificate, can be fined $4OO and will never be engaged as a boilerman in New Zealand or Australia
again (Boilers, Lifts and Cranes Act). These strict rules (and especially fines) to my knowledge, do not apply to any fitter, turner or other tradesman in New Zealand, yet the employers refuse to recognise this situation. Surely such recognition as we ask for, is justified. — Yours, etc., JOCK GRIEVE. December 2, 1978.
