Yachtsmen home
The Christchurch yachts-! man, Bret de Thier, returned home from Britain yesterday with mixed feelings about the tenth placing he and his partner Steve Moffat, gained in the world Tornado class championships at Weymouth. The pair has gained automatic qualification for the next world championships in Germany next year: the top 12 boats have automatic entry. De Thier and Moffat came tenth in a fleet of 80 boats.
De Thier said yesterday he was pleased but also a little disappointed. “We were pleased to get in the top 10 but we had gear failure in two races and in one of them we were in a position where we could have finished in the top three,” he said. “That
probably cost us maybe fifth or sixth place.” De Thier, twice an Olyrnpic representative and five times a New Zealand Finn class champion, switched tu the two-man Tornado ca* tamaran class only last season and won the national title at Wellington and the Air New Zealand Olympia week regatta. His long-term aim is to qualify for the 1980 Olympics at Moscow. He and Moffat will defend their title at the national championships at Lyttelton early in January and will compete in the Air New Zealand regatta at Easter before returning to Europe. The main objectives there will be the world Tornado championships, the European championships in Helsinki, and the pre-Olympic regatta in Tallinn.
