Envoy to meet Sadat
N ZPA-Reuter Alexandria President Carter’s special envoy to the Middle East planned to see President Anwar Sadat yesterday in a bid to persuade Egypt to resume peace talks with Israel.
But Mr Sadat’s Foreign Minister (Mr Mohammed Ibrahim Kamel) said on Saturday that resumed talks would depend on America’s putting forward proposals of its own, of the kind Egypt could consider, in order to break the present deadlock.
Mr Kamel has now had two meetings with the United States envoy, Alfred Atherton, who is trying to arrange a new meeting of the Egyptian and Israeli Foreign Ministers. This would be convened in Sinai by the American Secretary of State (Mr Cyrus Vance) when he visits the Middle East this week. President Sadat met Saudi Arabia’s first Deputy-Premier (Crown Prince Fahd) yesterday to discuss the latest Middle-East developments. The newspaper said bilateral relations would also be discussed as well as future moves on the Middle East.
