Table tennis losses

Strong teams from Wellington and Hutt Valley had narrow wms against Canterbury table tennis sides In their annual match for the Clapshaw Trophy and Brightwell Cup, respectively, yesterdav Canterbury held both trophies after big wins in the North Island last year but the absence of sev•>ral leading women players has weakened Canterbury this season and that proved the difference between winning and losing for the home teams. ■ The Canterbury men beat Wellington. 8-4, but the Wellington women won by the same margin The mixed doubles were vital and Wellington won two if the three played to put itself in an unassailable position. The fourth match, which featured Canterbury’s top pair, Wavne Adamson and Jan Morns, yas not played. Adamson and Miss Morris would have almost •ertainlv won the contest to even the score 14-al!. but Wellington iad enough games in hand to iave won on a count-back. In the contest against Hutt Valiev the men tied six-all, but Tutt Valley gained the lead with y 7-5 victory in the women’s natches. Hutt Valley won the irst two mixed doubles —often a weakness of Canterbury teams—to gain , a 15-11 lead. The other two doubles were not played. The Canterbury champions, Xdamson and Miss Morris were the backbone of their teams, win--ling both singles against the two northern teams. They were also unbeaten in doubles. But some of the Canterbury nlavers were disappointing and will have to improve rapidly if Canterbury is to make a bold showing at the national teams’ championship in August. The veteran. John Armstrong,!

was the only other Canterbury player to remain undefeated In singles. Michael Hamel. Harry Redmond and Les Stewart were all beaten twice. Results:— MEN Canterbury t Wellington 4 Singles.—W. D.
