Ballesteros in front

NZPA-Reuter Cologne Severiano Ballesteros (Spain) hit a third-round 70 yesterday to lead the West German open golf championship by two strokes from the South African, John Fourie, who shot 67.

Ballesteros has a 15-under-par total of 201, after previous rounds of 64 and 67. Bob Charles, of New Zealand, hit a fine six-under-par 66 in the third round to give him a total of 207, after earlier rounds of 72 and 69. And the Warwickshire 18-year-old, Paul Downes, won the English amateur golf championship at Royal Birkdale, Southport, yesterday.

The New Zealander, Pat Garner, bowed out of the championship on Friday. The 28-year-old Aucklander, who gained special dispensation to play in the championship on residential grounds, lost 2 and 1 to the British Universities match play champion, Stephen Potter.
