Skating record falls
A New Zealand women’s record was broken by the Westland ice skater, Ans Kremer, in the national marathon at Little Lake Ida on Saturday. As well as improving the old time by 12.5 s in covering the 42km event in Ihr 31 min 43.55ec, Miss Kremer led home the senior men skaters.
Victory in the men’s race went to Bob Montgomery (Canterbury), who had been forced to miss other championship races this season because of a leg injury. Montgomery, the winner in 1966 and 1971, did not seem affected by his injury. He had a little more than 2min to spare over Jan Havenaar (Canterbury), a former champion. Rain had weakened the ice
on the lake and a second track had to be marked after it was discovered that the original circuit had areas of thin ice. However, the new track provided a reasonable surface for the 85-lap event. Montgomery and Mike Day (Canterbury) set a fast pace from the start, but Havenaar and Miss Kremer gradually recovered to catch them after 15 laps. Montgomery and Miss Kremer made a break as Day suffered leg trouble and
dropped back, and then Havenaar had a problem with his back muscles. At half-way, Montgomery and Miss Kremer were 500 m clear of Havenaar, and they almost doubled that advantage by the last quarter of the race. Miss Kremer, who did much of the pace work,
l pulled away over the last • lap and a half for a popular i victory. Jon Havenaar fared a r little better than his father ■in the junior race over 15km. He skated clear from i the start and maintained a : steady pace, winning by . almost 4mins. His time was 35min 35.3 s — only half a minute outside the record held by Brett Oetgen. It was an impressive performance by Havenaar, who exceeded his own expectations.
