$800 fine in heroin case

A Motueka farm worker was fined $BOO in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington for importing half a gram of heroin into New Zealand. John Alistair Berenston, aged 27, appeared before Mr B. J. McKerr, S.M.. for sentence, having pleaded guilty to two charges of importing heroin from- Indonesia.
He had sent the heroin to his Motueka address.
The Magistrate fined Berentson $4OO on each charge. The accused’s previous convictions had related to cannabis: “But like too many others you have become involved in hard drugs,” said the Magistrate.
