Punters put $402M on horses
PA Wellington New Zealand punters bet a record S4O2M on horses — most of them losers — in the season which ended on Saturday. That is about $l4O for each man, woman and child in the country. The total was nearly S36M up on the previous season’s bets.
Nearly SII4M was put on at racetracks, and rather more than double that — S2B9M — at T.A.B.s. Winners collected a little more than S3OOM — 80.19 c of each dollar go back in dividends. The Government got S36M — 9c of each dollar — and the rest went towards overheads and levies.
