Woman bank manager

Sir, — In the article on a woman bank manager (“The Press,” July 26) we wonder how readers would react if “she” was changed to “he”:

e.g. “Behind the desk sits a handsome young man with fair, shoulder length hair ... He looks efficiency-plus in his smart flannel suit . . . Fow would h; handle a hold up? Certainly not by playing a heroic Superman.” This article is an example of stereotyping and poor reporting. — Yours, etc., W. PRESTNEY. J. MOONSTAR. July 28, 1978. [We did not agree that the article was poor reporting; but we suspect that the views expressed by the above correspondents, and by earlier correspondents, would lead to the conclusion that the young bank manager’s appointment should not be reported at all for fear that even noticing the appointment implies “stereotyping.”—Editor]
