A church drama
Bruce Stewart’s radio dama (Concert programme, tonight) "Rage Among the Lilies” is based on a true story documented from a midnineteenth century court case know as Connelly v. Connelly. The case looks fairly straight forward. The plaintiff, Pierce Connelly, brings suit for the restitution of marital rights against his wife, Cornelia. But what was uncommon
was that Pierce Connelly was a Roman Catholic priest and Cornelia a professed nun. The drama is followed by an examination of the ecclesiastical, human and legal conflicts of this unique case.
The Catholic Church maintained that Cornelia Connelly was a nun and belonged in a convent. English law, and her husband, said that she was a wife whose place was at home.
