P.M. ‘hopeful’

PA Wellington The Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) hopes that agreement will be reached on a new award for the freezing industry before the start of the new season. Talks broke down when the Meat Workers’ Union refused to negotiate unless prosecutions against almost 200 Southland freezing workers for alleged breaches of the Industrial Relations Act were withdrawn. “I hope we will get an agreement on next season’s wages before the start of

the season,” Mr Muldoon said at the National Party conference last evening. He was answering a question from a delegate during a special session in which any of the delegates could question Cabinet Ministers. Mr Muldoon said that the union executive, as well as farmers and employers, wanted an agreement. “I hope that when we get the Southland prosecutions out of the way. say in a month from now, they will get back into conciliation. I can assure you they all want it,” Mr Muldoon said.
