Challenge in bowls repulsed once again
The Canterbury indoor bowls team successfully retained the A. S. Paterson Trophy when it beat Golden Bay-Motueka. 34-14. at the Kearneys Road hall on Saturday. This was the forty-third successive challenge Canterbury has repulsed for the trophy, and it was not as easy a win as the score suggests. Canterbury led. 14-10, after the morning round but the two pairs matches were particularly close. Trevor Austin and .Mavis Lancaster were trailing 0-7 but reco\ered to win. 8-7, while Leon McLennan and Barry Weir won 9-5. after being behind, 0-5. . Golden Bay-Motueka was forced to make a late change. Michael Johnson replacing the veteran, Jack Evans. Johnson. £ ow . e ' e *’; . was well beaten by David Philpott, a University student, 13-4. The second round pairs was a repeat of the morning round. Canterbury coming from behind m three games to win two and draw one. Canterbury' won five singles matches to make the last round tours a formality. Alf Williamson •von easily but Leon McLennan tad a tough battle before beating lon Inglis, 13-11.
