DOUBLE TROUBLE The avid racegoer is a breed apart. He may forever be chasing elusive’ riches, but once caught up in the; excitement of a winning streak he can: do the oddest things. And these are; not always associated with the placement of bets. Recently a Christchurch man. who* knows from long experience both thel joy of success and the dejection of | failure, attended the night trots at Addington. It was a good night for him and * with money to spend he was making frequent visits to »arnu« * windows. He had placed his bets for the approaching race when ne uecioeu on an investment of a more certain ’ nature, a hot dog.
There was a queue at the hot dog* stand and it was while he was waiting in line that he decided on one further bet. He Was still mulling the bet over when he reached the counter and it was obviously paramount in his mind for instead of a food order he asked the startled assistant for seven and* four, the quinella bet he had chosen. The girl behind the counter was* quick-witted enough to tell him he | was in the wrong queue and his! embarrassment was not lessened by* the mirth his mistake prompted among: others within ear-shot. He got his hot dog all right, but its | taste was somewhat ruined by a* bystander’s parting remark that he ' ought to try his luck at buying a pie from a totalisator window.
