Calf prices up at Tinwald
After a cautious start, prices at the Tinwald calf sale soon improved $6 to $8 a head on late rates, and in some cases even more. Small and medium calves sold very well on the day. The yarding was of average size, about threequarters of the yards being filled, but smaller than last year. This was a reflection of the number of cows that have been slaughtered in the Ashburton district. Also, some breeders are retaining their calves. The young cattle came forward in good order considering the long dry summer and autumn. Most were tussock bred. There was a good attendance of buyers. Ross Brothers sold a pen of Angus steer calves at $7B; Mount Possession station Hereford steer calves at $73;
G. B. Gerard Angus cross heifer calves at $46; and R. W. Johnson and Son Angus cross heifer calves at $44. The following is a range of values: Hereford steer calves: best, to $73; good, $65 to $7O; medium to good, $5l to $64; small to medium, $3B to $4B; and small from $22. Angus steer calves: best, to $7B;. good, $5O to $64; medium,' $42 to $53; small, from $3O.
