F.O.L. to avoid Bastion Pt issue

PA Auckland The Federation of Labour is likely to stay out of the Bastion Point issue, notwithstanding a request by the Auckland Trades Council. The F.O.L.’s president (Sir Thomas Skinner) said last evening that the executive had not considered the matter nor was it likely to.

The Trades Council, at a meeting last evening, decided to ask the F.O.L. to discuss Bastion Point. The protesters had wanted the F.O.L. to ask the Government to stay its hand.

About 40 Auckland City Council rubbish collectors have decided to stop work if attempts are made to remove the protesters. However, the Auckland Waterside Workers’ Union executive has decided to stay out of the issue. It was even implied that the union supports the settlement which elders of the Ngawhatua tribe and the Government have reached.

The watersiders’ executive sayS it feels that any support given to the protesters could “seriously interfere with the harmony and equality” which exists among people of many different races in the unjon.
