Avant poses threat
NZPA Sydney The Christchurch motorcyclist, Stu Avant, is rated an excellent chance for an upset win in the second round of the Australian Motor-cycle championship at Oran Park tomorrow following practice yesterday. Avant will ride his Total Suzuki RGSOO in both the 500 cu cm and unlimited rounds of the championship. He already leads the 500 cu cm series after a firstround win and is favourite to increase his lead in tomorrow’s race. Yesterday’s practice performance has also put him in strong contention for the unlimited series race against the more powerful 750 cu cm bikes that usually dominate the class.
Avant practised at around the 46s mark, only marginally outside the course record held by the Australian international, Gregg Hansford, on a Kawasaki 750.
Avant is poised to repeat his countryman, John Woodley’s performance last year when he meets Rick Perry (Kawasaki 750) and Murray Sayle (Yamaha 750) tomorrow.
