Lister down golf field

NZPA-Reuter New Orleans John Lister (New Zealand) scored a first-round 76 at the start of the SUS2OO,OOO New Orleans open golf tournament at the Lakewood Country Club yesterday. Lister was well behind the leaders. Lee Trevino birdied the final hole for a seven-under-par 65 to take a onestroke margin over Mark Hayes, while Ray Floyd, Homero Blancas and Bob Smith are two back at 67.

Gary Player, of South Africa, winner of the last three tournaments, had a three-under par 69 with three birdies and no bogeys. And in Madrid, Spain’s Severiano Ballesteros retained his lead in the Madrid open golf championship by returning a par 72 in the second round.

But his overnight threestroke advantage was reduced to two by Britain’s Howard Clark, who shot a 70 yesterday for a four-under par total of 140. Clark is two ahead of another Briton, Peter Townsend.
