Arapawa goats

Sir, — As a member of the Arapawa Wildlife Trust I feel 1 must clarify a statement in your article, “Sanctuary for Arapawa Goats” in Thursday’s issue of “The Press,” the 100 goats to be taken off will be taken after the culling operations have been . completed. The cullers will be on the island for eight to 10 weeks and shoot everything that is “practicable.” At the end of the day (if we are lucky) there may not be 100 left. If there are, there may be 98 billies and two nannies, and they could not maintain the breed. The balance has to be carefully weighed before a breed can be retained. The solution is a sanctuary so that the animals can remain where they have been for 200 years. This is our history about which we are talking. Captain Cook probably left the ancestors of the present breed, and the island situation has ensured that they remained pure. We cannot allow another species to die out. — Yours, etc.,
