Trout farming

Sir, — Like many other curious members of the public, I wonder why trout farming in this country is not made legal. Every other form of aquaculture is practised including mussels, oysters, freshwater crayfish (koura), eels, and salmon. The Government supports all these ventures as highly productive intensive units, but one species has been ignored, the poor trout. The public in general ask why, scientists see ho reason why it should not be legal, and the relatively small faction of anglers opposed to it, repeatedly uses arguments that have been shot down so many times it would be morbid to do so again. One could say that they are protecting a sacred cow by flogging a dead horse. Now that the issue has become one of a political nature, questions of good or bad are ignored, and the whole issue blossoms into a nebulous and frustrating state. — Yours, etc., M. FIELD DODGSON.
