Fluoridation

Sir, — I read with interest Briar Cambourn’s presentation of the cases for and against fluoridation (“The Press,” April 28). The article seemed to me a genuinely “balanced” statement of the two sides, until the final paragraph, that is. Quoting a speaker at an Australian health symposium. Miss Cambourn suddenly appeared to favour the pro

side — 1 emphasise "appeared”; the speaker in fact destroyed his own argument by drawing a parallel with substances that are voluntarily taken by people — fluoridated water supply does not come into this category. The quoted speaker further illustrated his naivety by making a joke of it all (quote: “soon we’ll be banning beer and women”). Perhaps 90 per cent of people given free tablets do forget to take them; so, they get rotten teeth. Perhaps, also they live longer. I say, leave the choice with the individual. — Yours, etc., RICHARD BARRETT. April 28, 1978.
