Strikes and the law

Sir, — It is about time that the Government used its laws. National Party candidates made a great amount of noise at the last election about strikes and how they, if elected, would do something. I am still waiting to see when thev are going to take the railway men to court in Wellington after their illegal strike, also the freezing workers for their strikes when they were illegal. The Drivers’ Union admits in today’s issue of “The Press” that they are breaking the law and, on TV2 tonight. the union official at Kawerau said there would be further problems if the company used the law against individual unionists. Mr Muldoon stepped in unwisely to the freezing works dispute and used taxpayers’ money to get a settlement. Since then we have had further unrest in the industry. When is the Government going to be strong and stand up for the laws it has made? — Yours, etc., L. RENNIE. April 26, 1978.
