NZPA-Reuter Itoh, Japan The Filipino player, Ruben Rodriguez. beat Australia’s Terry Shaw yesterday on the eighth day of an elimination round to advance to the final round-robin tournament of the first AsiaPacific international chess champi'.« ship from February 18 to 22.

Rodriguez, competing in the 10-player group A elimination round, was the third to qualifj' to take part in the four-man Kunal tournament which will select two representatives of the zone 10 (East Asia and Pacific region) at next year’s international tournament to choose a challenger for the world chess title in 1981.

The two other finalists are the Philippine grand masters, Eugene Torre and Rosendo Balinas.

Ewen Green, of New Zealand, has a good chance of being the fourth qualifier, after beating Gentar Gonda (Japan) yesterday. Green has five points and needs one more to qualify.

Craig Laird (New Zealand) lost to lan Rogers (Australia). Laird has two points.
