Protest against abortion law
A mass meeting to protest; against the abortion clauses' in the Contraception, Sterilisation, and Abortion Act' will be held in Christchurch! later this month. The meeting has been or-! ganised by a group of Christchurch women in response to calls by many people who are “horrified, frightened, and angered” by the legislation, according to a member of the organising committee (Ms Glenys Laughlin). It aims to unite factions of the women’s movement, othei groups affected by the legislation, and all who feel any concern for the issue, she says. It is planned to provide an occasion on which these people can come together to register their disapproval of repressive abortion legislation. The organisers hope the Govern-
iment will “take notice and J repeal these laws.” I Mrs Whetu Tirikatene-Sul- ! livan will speak at the meeting, which will be held in I the Town Hall Limes Room jon February 27 at 8 p.m. ■ Representatives of concerned f organisations, and individ- ■ uals will also be able to r address the meeting. Dis- , plays will be set up. / After the meeting those > attending can spend time ; discussing the issue and > what they could do on a more personal level, says Ms > Laughlin. , A collection will be taken ;; to help the Sisters OverII seas Service. S.O.S. is work,'ing hard to provide short- > l term solutions for the very t serious problems caused by lithe “repressive legislation,” r I problems which will be -I eradicated only by the ret'peal of the legislation, Ms •ILaughlin says.
