Lion Brown shearing
Points gained in the open, senior and intermediate sections at the Murchison show last week count toward the Lion Brown all breeds New Zealand shearing titles, the administrator for the titles, Mr J. B. Williams, advises. In the open the winner was Ken Haldane (Lincoln) with 91.85 pts, Mike Boyd (Reefton) was second with 91.84 and John Pomare (Lincoln) third with 87. Mr Williams says that Haldane shore his 10 lambs in the final in 9 min 57 sec and Pomare, a 46-year-old Chatham Islander who was attending only his second competition on the circuit, put up a good performance that surprised the judges. He has been a full-time shearer all his working life. Placings in the other classes were: Senior: S. Win (Murchison) 1. B. Hunter (Reefton) 2. A. Walker (Murchison) 3. Intermediate: G. Sutherland (Rangiora) L N. Leslie 2. K. Leslie (Blenheim) 3. Junior: A. Clarke 1. G. Taylor 2. O. Lane 3. Mr Williams says that there were 35 entries altogether and the contest was a feature of the show, at which Mr R. Kidd, of the Wool Board, opened the new shearing pavilion.
