Humphrey’s successor
Mrs Muriel Humphrey has agreed to fill the Senate seat of her late husband, Hubert Humphrey, until a special election is held in November, and has said she expects to complete “some important business Hubert hoped to finish.” She will be the Senate’s only woman member. She told a brief news conference, however, that it was too early to tell whether she would seek election in November to fill Out the then remaining four years of her late husband’s term. — Hillsboro Beach (Florida).
Archbishop’s plea
Archbishop Donald Coggan, of Canterbury, spiritual leader of the world’s 65 million Anglicans, has preached in the Roman Catholic Westminster Cathedral for the first time, and called for greater efforts towards Christian unity. He renewed his controversial plea that there should be “joint participation in the sacrament of the Eucharist” between Anglicans and Roman Catholics. Cardinal Basil Hume will next Tuesday become the first leader of England’s Roman Catholics to address the General Synod of the Church of England. — London. Seal-ban call Parliamentarians of the 20-nation Council of Europe have called on their Governments to suspend the hunting of harp seals for two years until quotas are set after a debate attended by Brigitte Bardot.
