Study of archives
Dr W. I. Smith, a distinguished Canadian archivist. will visit Christchurch in March as part of a tour of New Zealand archives. He will write a report on his findings, making recommendations for future development and legislation. visit, from March 6 to 10, I would be towards the end of his New Zealand tour, which would begin shortly, said a spokesman for the Canterbury Archives Council. Fund Board of Cont 01, to bring Dr Smith to New Zealand. Dr Smith, aged 58, was an archivist of the “highest credentials,” said the Canterbury spokesman. He has been Dominion Archivist of Canada since 1970, having joined the Public Archives of Canada in 1950, He served as president of the Society of American Archivists for 1972-73. and he is a member of the International Council on Archives. He has lectured in history at three universities. In Christchurch, Dr Smith will visit the University of Canterbury, the Museum, and the Public Library. On the evening of March 8 he will address a public meeting at the museum lecture theatre. The public are invited.
