They spent freely

From J. J. BOYLE Auckland Hard times ahead? Who would have believed it. Not those in the crowd of 33,390 who bet a New Zealand record of $1,354,604 on Auckland Cup Day at Ellersleslie.

The roll-up for New Zealand’s first $lOO,OOO race was up by 8179 on last year when the on-course turnover was $1,027,387. Total betting on and offcourse on Monday’s racing at picturesque Ellerslie was $2,758,833.50, an increase of $632,131 on last year. All the signs for the most successful racing day ever at Ellerslie were obvious early in the day. With Uncle Remus running in the Clifford Plate just as much an attraction for many as the outcome of the Cup, the crowds were on the move and the club’s biggest car park was full an hour before the first race. The big crowd included a party of 80 South Islanders brought to Auckland by National Airways Corporation and “The Press.”
