Forest holds soccer lead

NZPA-R«uter London Trevor Boss scored a penalty for Everton four minutes from the end against Nottingham Forest yesterday and so prevented Forest taking an even bigger lead at the top of the English First Division. Liverpool and Arsenal, the third and fourth-placed dubs, both won — but newly-promoted Forest has emerged from the rush of four matches in eight days with six points and its position at the top is enhanced. However, the match between the two top teams in Nottingham was a disappointment and it was appropriate that both goals should come from penalties — the game was punctuated by free kicks. Liverpool was left behind its neighbour, Everton, only on goal difference thanks to Liverpool’s 2-0 home win over Middlesbrough.

Arsenal struggled to beat Ipswich 1-0, thanks to a goal by David Price eight minutes before half-time. The first division’s surprise of the day came from relegationhaunted Newcastle United which won, 2-0, at Leeds, having gone through its three previous matches without scoring.
