Large junior tennis entries

A total of 344 players will contest the Ballins Canterbury age group tennis championships, which start today at Wilding Park and continue until Sunday.

The players will compete in four age groups — under 19, under 17, under 15 and under 13. The entries are notable for the large number of national and international competitors — 155 players from outside Christchurch will be playing. The tournament precedes the South Island junior championships, to be held in Timaru, and the national under 17 and under 15 championships which follow in Dunedin. This accounts for the big number of leading players from the North Island and other South Island associations.

To add interest to the tournament, eight Australians, two Canadians and one player from the United States will be competing.

The chairman of the Canterbury Junior Tennis Association, Mr Maurie Agar, said on Monday that his committee had still to find billets for about 70 players. The tournament

opens this morning at 9 o’clock.

The top-seeded player in the under 19 boys’ section is Auckland’s Mark Lewis, the younger brother of Chris Lewis. The No. 2 seed is Kelly Evernden, a leading Australian junior now living in Poverty Bay.

Canterbury’s Anne Davidson heads the girls’ under 19 seedings, followed by Jenny Oakley, of Hutt Valley. The two top Canterbury juniors, Brett Hibbert and Carolyn Oakley, will not be competing in the tournament as they have both been selected to represent New Zealand in the Linton and Wilson Cup teams to play in Perth, Australia. The teams will assemble in Christchurch today prior to their departure on Friday. Seedings for the Ballins tournament.— Under 19
