Boost for W. Lees

PA Palmerston North National selectors watched Warren Lees score 100 not out against Central Districts for Otago in yesterday’s Shell series cricket match at Palmerston North — certainly enough to put him ahead of Jock Edwards in the race for the New Zealand wicket-keeping berth. Otago finished its 75 overs at 265 for six wickets and at stumps, Central Districts was 68 for three, after losing Robert Anderson and Rod Thomas in the last minutes. Wayne Blair, with an often lucky 43, provided the initial impetus to the Otago innings against an accurate mediumpace attack from Denis Kay and Rod Thomas. Paul Focoory was very solid in making 35 in 174 minutes, but he played a most important part in the partnership with his captain, Warren Lees. The pair added 104 in 132 minutes. lan Rutherford and Anderson opened for Central. The 50 came up in 53 minutes, and Central will obviously try to push the score along today.
