RECKLESS THIRD

NZPA Pert Victoria’s wonder stayer, Reel iless, was tipped from his pedetal in a sensational $lOO,OOO Pert. Cup (3200 m at Ascot on Monday. However, despite his defeat, there were al! the signs of courage and stamina. The race went to a local mare, Golden Centre, with last year's winner Muros second and Reckless two lengths away third. Reckless pulled up sore after faltering at the 1000 m mark. His jockey, Pat Trotter, dismouned soon after the finish and led the hobbling Reckless back to scale. "I felt him go at the lOOOni.” said Trotter. “He was travelling well and I was certain he would win, then he faltered, dipped, and became unbalanced. “He couldn’t get going then but was going strongly at the finish." Reckless was always favourite, opening at 10 to 9 and touching odds on before starting at even money.
