Helicopter rescue
Greymouth reporter An injured Ashburton climber was rescued by helicopter from the Wilkinson Hut in the Whitcombe River area on Monday afternoon. Malcolm Robert Perkins, aged 23, was one of a party of four tramping from the Rakaia River to the Hokitika Gorge when he injured a knee.
His companions helped him to the hut, where they sent out a message on a mountain radio they carried with them. The Hokitika police arranged for a helicopter to pick up Mr Perkins. He was treated by a doctor at Hokitika and discharged.
