Underwood works for golf win
NZPA Brisbane. The Texas professional golfer Hal Underwood strode jauntily to a win in the 830,000 Queensland open at the Pacific Club on Sunday. Underwood hit a 72 hole total of 231 for a seven under the card two stroke win over Peter Headland (N.S.W.) and Queensland’s Mike Ferguson.
The 30-year-old American had to fight all the way as the lead continually changed hands, with spirited challenges coming in the closing stages from Ferguson, Headland and the Victorian professional, lan Stanley.
But Underwood clinched the title with a birdie on the long 490 metre eighteenth, which he dismissed with a drive, a 4 Iron and two putts to take out first prize money of $6OOO. Terry Kendall, of New Zealand, after three days of machine-like golf, came in fourth, level with Ashley Cooper (West Australia). Kendall had rounds of 73, 72, 69, and 71.
BUI Brask (U.S.) and Stuart Ginn (Tasmania) ended on 288. The next New Zealander was Craig Owen, on 72, 76, 72, 69— 289 Other New Zealand scores: R. Codmbes 290. G. Smart 291. S. Reese 293, B. Vivian 297.
