Cross to be stabilised

Repairs to the foundations of the stone cross on the north side of Christchurch Cathedral began yesterday — in plenty of time to avoid the calamity which almost befell a passer-by w hen the original cross toppled about 50 years ago.

Newspaper reports of September, 1926, said that a young girl came within “feet of death” when the heavy stone cross fell after being unseated by a particularly strong wind. The girl had escaped serious injury although she was hurt by other pieces of debris which fell with the cross. The Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. M. L. Underhill) said It appeared to have been a week of disasters in 1926. When he asked an elderly member of the cathedral’s staff if he remembered the Incident, Dean Underhill said, he was met with the reply: “Yes, of course, that was the week Canterbury lost a Ranfurly Shield match to Hawke’s Bay.” Dean Underhill said there was no chance of the cross falling again.

The one which fell in 1926 had been replaced and it was merely the foundations of this one which were shaky.
