The greatest —no denying
Many times in the past Canterbury has been unofficially recognised as having the best rugby team in New Zealand. This season it is official. By demolishing Taranaki, 22-3, at Lancaster Park yesterday Canterbury extended its unbeaten record in Division One of the Radio New Zealand championship to nine matches, and clinched the title. Canterbury not only won, but did so in true champion’s style. Its for wards, in particular, played outstandingly and their
performance is rated as good as any by a Canterbury pack in recent times. Canterbury’s last match is against Auckland at Lancaster Park on Saturday, and is important only for the preservation of an unbeaten record. Last year’s winner of the inaugural contest, Bay of Plenty, had eight wins, one loss, and one draw. Kevin McMenamin’s account of yesterday’s match appears on the back page. On page 22 is a special tribute to the Canterbury side, taking in its eight previous matches.
