No more babies at Calvary
Calvary Hospital’s maternity department has delivered its last baby. Mrs C. Bolgar gave birth to a daughter on Tuesday evening — and when she leaves the hospital in about five days time, the maternity department will close. The department was to have closed on August 31 but the manager of the hospital (Mr M. J. Woodward) said seven late babies had delayed the event.
Two patients are in the department — Mrs Bolgar, and a woman who gave birth' on Monday evening. Falling birth rates and a need to make more economical use of facilities have led the hospital to convert the department into six suites of offices for nine surgeons. The building — which already has a separate entrance — will be called Calvary Chambers. Conversion of the ward will begin next Monday. The new offices will be ready for occupation on January 1.
