New low for B.H.P.
There were improvements among leading shares during trading on Australian stock exchanges yesterday, but B.H.P.’s fall of 4c to 540 c, a new low for the year, was indicative of the overall weakness and concern over economic and other factors.
The banking sector was also easier with the B.N.S.W. down 4c to 516 c and the National Bank 8c to 275 c. The A.N.Z. went against the trend and gained 4c to 328 c but was still down on Monday
Finance, building, retailing and other important groups were generally down on the day. T.N.T. gained a cent to close at 117 c ahead of final results, while Phillip Morris fell 10c to 720 c on mixed results while Elder Smith rose 3c to 200 c on its results.
