Airline ‘waiting’

Ground stewards at Air New Zealand's in-flight kitchen in Christchurch have let their strike deadline elapse, but the threat has not been withdrawn. Two weeks ago the stewards gave notice of their intention to strike over the interpretation of a Conciliation Court decision on a demarcation dispute with the Canterbury Hotel Workers Union.

Members of this union work with the stewards in the airline’s flight kitchen. The dispute centres on which union should work a

new dish-washing machine. Negotiations between union officials and the airline continued in Auckland last evening. According to the southern district manager of Air New Zealand (Mr G. Ward), the status quo was being maintained. He would not say how the talks were going. No contingency plans had been made to cope

with the effects of any eventual strike, said Mr Ward. "We will just have to wait and see if it happens.”
