N.Z. side wins hockey
NZPA Adelaide A strong New Zealand hockey side overpowered South Australia, 4-2, in Adelaide yesterday. South Australia held the tourists to I-all at half-time but could not contain its opponent in the second half. For New Zealand goals were scored by Ramesh Patel and Keith Gorringe while Arthur Parkin hit two penalties.
South Australia's goals came from goals by David Francis and Terry Smith. South Australia displayed more aggression in the first half and was unlucky not to score at least three times.
Its first goal came in the twenty-seventh minute when David Francis stopped a kick by New Zealand’s goalkeeper, and while lying on the ground managed to flick the ball into an empty net. After the match New Zealand’s coach, Mr Brian Maunsell, said he was pleased with his side’s performance. “It demonstrated the type of play we’re capable of. “The passing was more precise, and I’m confident now we can show we’re much closer to Australia than results in the first three tests showed. “However, the team’s still only a shadow of what it was 12 months ago."
Tennis.—Tom Okker, of the Netherlands, and Marty Reissen of the United States, needed five sets to win the United States professional doubles tennis championships against the unseeded twins Tim and Tom Gullikson. at Houston. Okker and Reissen split a SUS3O,OOO first prize after winning, 3-6. 6-3, 6-3. 4-6, 6-1.
