‘Press’ golf field filling
The field for "The Press’’ Garden City Celebrity Golf Classic is beginning to fill satisfactorily. Already there have been steady entries from players, and there have been confirmed acceptances from 29 of the invited celebrities. The tournament, which replaces the former Garden City Classic, will be held at Harewood’s two courses on November 17 and 18. Money raised will be devoted to the provision of Jaws of Life equipment for use by the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Brigade. Bishop Ashby is one of the celebrities to have accepted the invitation. Canon Bob Lowe is another. Dr Morgan Fahey a third. Two members of Parliament have also accepted. They are Mr John Kirk, member for Sydenham and Mr Koro Wetene, member for Western Maori.
The former All Black captain, Bob Duff, is among the celebrities, and representatives of some other sports have already confirmed their entries. They include Mervyn Good (hockey) and Ken Simpson (athletics). Several Canterbury professionals will be playing and of the top amateurs invited, acceptances have so far been received from Bruce Taylor and Des Turner. The Jaws of Life equipment, designed to free passengers from cars involved in accidents, has already been ordered. The Christchurch fire brigade has agreed to demonstrate the value of the equipment in Cathedral Square before the tournament is staged. The draw to match players with celebrities will be made on the evening of November 1.
