Teaching for “aimless”
Concern about the number of young, aimless people wandering the streets of Christchurch has prompted the City Missioner (Captain Peter Coughlan) to set up a programme to teach basic skills.
Captain Coughlan says that the programme, which will be an extension of one already underway at Mount Grey near Rangiora, should be working, at the end of the year. “There are too many young people without jobs, prospects and abi» lities at present, and we hope that a re-entry programme will be able to teach them the reading, writing and learning skills,” he said. “We will also discuss topics such as what should be done at job interviews.” Captain Coughlan said those taking the course will live in a hostel at Rangiora and travel to Christchurch for instruction. "I am very confident that we will get a good response, as there have already been several applicants," he said.
